Death Before Decaf? Doesn’t have to be. - The Coffee Benders

Death Before Decaf? Doesn’t have to be.

For too long, decaf’s been the punchline. The coffee world has treated it like a second-rate option. Something you drink when you have to, not because you want to. And to be fair, it’s rightfully earnt that reputation in the past. For years, decaf meant low-quality beans, high chemical processing and flat, lifeless flavour.

But things have certainly changed.

Decaf’s finally getting the respect it deserves, from producers, roasters and hopefully soon drinkers alike.

It begs the question: is coffee only about the buzz?

Why Choose Decaf?

Sure, caffeine can be a wonderful thing. But so is sleeping well, feeling calm, and never having to cut yourself off from that extra brew.

Here’s why decaf might be your new best mate:

  • Sleep-friendly sips: No buzz, no problem. Perfect for evenings or second (third) coffees.

  • Gentler on the nervous system: Great if you're managing anxiety, pregnancy, or just done with the jitters.

  • Flavour-first thinking: Good decaf isn’t just a caffeine-free version of the “real thing.” It is the real thing.

  • Espresso Martinis/Unlimited coffee: If caffeine is the only thing holding you back then buckle up buddy!

The Process: Sugarcane EA (It’s Science, But Delicious)

The Sugarcane EA (ethyl acetate) process is a natural method of decaffeination that begins with steamed green coffee beans. Steaming opens the bean’s pores, making it easier to remove caffeine. The beans are then repeatedly soaked in a solution of water and ethyl acetate, a compound naturally derived from sugarcane. This solution selectively bonds with the caffeine molecules and draws them out of the beans. After the caffeine is removed, the beans are steamed again to remove any remaining EA. The result is a decaf coffee that retains much of its original flavour, with no harsh chemicals involved.

Meet the Decaf: Wilton Benitez, Colombia

Let’s get into the good stuff.

This decaf was an absolute stand out when we first cupped it. Fruity mandarin notes with lemongrass and bold chocolate body. It goes great as a spro, milky or filter (our favourite).

Some more info:

  • Producer: Wilton Benitez

  • Location: Piendamó, Cauca, Colombia

  • Altitude: 1700–2100 MASL

  • Varietal: Red Bourbon

  • Process: Sugarcane EA

Wilton is a standout producer known for his innovation and precision. We’ve enjoyed coffees of his in the past and are really excited to add a decaf to our lineup.

This One’s No Afterthought

We didn’t chuck a decaf on the menu just to tick a box. We chose this coffee because we actually enjoy drinking it and we reckon everyone deserves to have great coffee, no matter their caffeine preferences.

No judgement, no compromises, no second-rate beans. Just a bloody good brew, minus the buzz.

So whether you’re winding down, cutting back, or just curious - this is decaf worth sipping with pride.

Still a skeptic?

We hear you, we do! That’s why we got our mates to do a blind tasting and here's just one of the reviews:

"Being an experienced judge I would be hard pressed to tell you this coffee was a decaf. It's a delicious coffee on its own and knowing now, being a complete surprise, makes it even better because now I can drink it whenever I like!"
